RONCALLI KOLLEG
DORMS
2010

Roncalli-Kolleg was erected in 1970 with the help of the Archbishop’s Ordinate from Munich and the architecture firm Hom & Eggendorfer. It was built upon the foundation of ecclesiastical law for the students of the Munich colleges that were established also at this time .The redevelopment concept consisted in optimizing the living situation of each student . Major drawbacks existed for the residents, particularly with regard to insufficient lighting, to little private living space, a lack of common areas , and a lack of privacy in lavatories.

With the extension in the south by 1.50 meter the residents gain almost 4m more of living space in their rooms . In addition to this there were created plenty of storage options , as well as a generous workspace . Nonetheless to solve the lighting deficit the parapets were removed and story high windows were installed, sufficiently illuminating the entire space.
Each two student rooms are closed to form a unit together . Through a common entrance reaches each of the two the bathroom or bedroom . In the room itself lies an access to the intermediary communal kitchen So that each pair form a small community.
Almost all residential units are oriented to the south . The only exception are the handicapped rooms, located in the north-western corner of the building . The rest of the northern half of the building is dedicated to the community. In addition to a shared kitchen there is a learning and working space.
